Matthews, Alabama is a small unincorporated community located in St. Clair County, Alabama, United States. It is situated in the central part of the state, about 25 miles east of Birmingham and 18 miles west of Talladega. The town is named after Col. A. Englehart Matthews, a veteran of the Mexican-American War who settled in the area in the mid-19th century. Matthews was known for its coal mining operations that began in the early 1900s and continued through the 1950s. Today, the town is mostly agricultural and has a population of around 350 people. There are several small businesses in the town, including a convenience store, a pharmacy, and a post office. The area is also known for its natural beauty, including the scenic Shoal Creek and the nearby Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve.
